National Home Improvement Show expert, George Clarke, presenter Build a new life and Channel 4's The Home Show gives his top five tips to making most of a small bathroom

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

There is no need to worry about small bathroom designs, although challenging, rest assured, there are many innovative and simple ways to maximise space, making the room appear larger, more airy and full of light.

  1. Make the most of unused spaces
In a small area, it is more important than ever to make the most out of every square inch you have available. You could push the bathtub and toilet to the wall so no remaining unused space remains behind these items. You can also put a stand-up shower in the corner.
It is important to keep floor areas free of clutter and so, instead of putting items on the floor, use overhead spaces for cabinets and hooks.
  2. Choose smaller bath items
A small bathroom design should house small fittings and appliances, this will free up space making the room appear larger and more airy. Having said that, make sure you buy fittings you and the whole family are comfortable using.
  3. Plan your lighting
Effective lighting can transform a bathroom, creating a clean and spacious impression. Natural light is the best source for brightening up dark corners and a window above the bath or shower is a good option. Additionally, to create light without compromising privacy, you could install a skylight.
If natural light is not an option, don’t go for a central pendant light; instead use spotlights so that the spread of illumination is evenly split over the room. You could buy a system which allows you to control the amount of light available. Additionally, consider feature lighting, such as small floor lights, these will add mood and atmosphere to the room.
  4. Choose light coloured paint or wallpaper
A room papered or painted in lighter hues will appear larger, fresher and more airy than a dark and heavy decoration. You should also pick similar lighter colours for your fixtures, fittings and flooring.
  5. Add Mirrors
Mirrors are essential in any bathroom but in an attempt to make a small bathroom appear larger, you could place two wall mirrors opposite each other. This will do wonders to expand the visual size of the room.
