“It’s brilliant! And just so simple, how come no-one’s thought of it before?” That’s what so many people say when they see the revolutionary Milli-grip adjustable spanner in action for the first time.
Ian Harrison, a retired engineer and college lecturer, was working on the exhaust of his car when, not unusually, his adjustable spanner slipped. On seeing his bleeding knuckles and hearing his furious language, his wife suggested: why not invent an adjustable spanner that won't slip? And that's just what he did.
With the design fine-tuned through various prototypes, the invention has become the Milli-grip: a set of open-ended metric spanners in one precision tool.
Double gold medal winner at the British Invention Show for Product Design and Innovation, the Milli-grip eliminates the problems inherent in the worm-gear design of the traditional adjustable spanner. We're all familiar with the way it can open up in use, rounding nuts and bolts and damaging knuckles. However, the Milli-grip features:
- jaws that will not open once set
- precision jaw setting in 1mm steps
- fast one handed operation
- soft touch, non-slip handle
- smooth jaws, not serrated, so can't damage nut or bolt
- precision manufacture from chrome vanadium
There are currently two metric models available. Each with the traditional 8" (200mm) handle, Milli-grip25 has jaws opening up to 25mm for everyday jobs, whilst Mill-grip32 goes up to a full 32mm for chunkier work. For plumbers it'll easily cope with a 22mm compression joint, while campers and caravanners will find it handy for opening the valve on a Calor gas bottle.
